TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) pain can arise before, during or after a clear aligner treatment. Actually, the issues most likely have been pre-existing and didn't necessarily have to cause the patient pain in the past.  And now, it is brought to the patient's awareness with increased attention to their mouth and the discomfort that can be normal when starting a new step of the plan. However, the TMJ of this patient can become just as well improve through treatment.

Any TMJ issues should be treated after the clear aligner treatment. Though, it is advised that the patient seek professional advice at any time they are experiencing problematic TMJ.

If your patient is experiencing TMJ pain we would suggest to analyze and document any changes or symptoms at each visit. You can also recommend a TMJ radiographic examination.
